Opal Rebecca Thompson, 98, of Lake Charles died at 5:39 AM on Saturday, March 16, 2013 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Thompson was born on July 1, 1914 in Bandy, VA. She was raised in Virginia where she was a graduate of Saltville High School before transferring to Lake Charles with her husband for his job. Following retirement they moved to Hot Springs Village, AR and then moved back to Lake Charles when widowed to be near her daughter. She was the oldest active member of St. Luke Simpson Methodist Church where she was involved in numerous organizations including the United Methodist Women's Craft Circle and Wesley Sunday School class.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister and will be deeply missed. Mrs. Thompson was adventurous and spunky and will be remembered as the pillar of the family.
Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Beatrice Peggy Claudel of Lake Charles; four grandsons, William Mark Claudel of Baton Rouge, Eric James Claudel of Lake Charles, Christopher Drew Claudel of Nashville, TN, and Warren Dale Claudel of Spring, TX; ten great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Ed Thompson, Sr.; a son, William Edgar Sonny Thompson, Jr.; and two brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Karl Klaus and Rev. Henry Bowdon will officiate. Cremation was entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will begin on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the start of the service.
