Percy Rogers DeRouen, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and “fix-it” man passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. He was 89 years ‘young’ born on April 9, 1928 to Allen and Lula Fontenot DeRouen in Bell City, LA.
Mr. Percy, as he was commonly known, graduated from Bell City High School and attended SLI (University of Louisiana) for two years before being drafted in the U.S. Army, where he served his time in Germany during the Korean War. Upon return, he resided in Lake Charles where he began a 35 year career as an Operator and Shipping Supervisor at Matheson Alkali (Olin Corp).
Percy had a tireless work ethic that he passed to his children and grandchildren. After retiring at 55, he built a shop in his backyard. He took in lawnmowers and any small engine machine to repair for little or nothing.
His passions were sports, outdoor recreation and Cajun music. He could be found on weekends in the same seat, year after year, in the McNeese stadium watching his beloved Cowboys while listening to his LSU Tigers with his ear phones on his transistor radio. He also spent his off time in the Bell City marsh, hunting or fishing from dawn until dusk. He loved French music and was often the last person off the dance floor! Percy participated as an active member of the Cowboy Club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and TPA.
Above all, Percy was a man of faith, a family man; he shared himself with his children and grandchildren, teaching them to be self-sufficient while providing love and support. He was married to Rose Katheryn, his wife of 59 years, until she passed in 2013. They were members of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish for over 60 years.
He is survived by his three children, Kathy Ackel and her family, Amber, Ben, Maggie and Maci; his daughter, Debbie Bohny and her husband, Rich, and children, Richie and Beth; and his son, Steve DeRouen and his wife Donna, and son, Allen and fiancée, Erica Busby and daughter, Claire and husband Matthew Owens.
He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Larry DeRouen and his wife Marleen, his brother, Dr. Tim DeRouen and wife Cheryl, his sister, Judy David and husband Hilton, and his sister, Nola Bourgeois, brother-in-law, H.W. (Billy) Miller and numerous nieces and nephews.
His service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Reverend Trey Ange will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a Rosary at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8:00 AM to 9:40 AM at the funeral home.
Special thanks to his doctor, Dr. Ron Lewis, Jr., his sitters, and the staff at Villa Maria.
