Priscilla H. "Pris" Rider

May 31, 1943 — May 12, 2024

Priscilla Mae Hargroder “Pris” Rider, a woman of unwavering faith and boundless love, passed away on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2024, at her home in Lake Charles. She was born on May 31, 1943, to Joseph and Femie Vidrine Hargroder in Basile, Louisiana.

Pris shared 62 years of marriage with her beloved husband, James J. Rider. Together, they lovingly raised six children whom she cherished and spoke of with immense pride. Pris had a nurturing spirit, always ready to provide both spiritual and physical nourishment to those around her. Her home was a place where no one left hungry, whether for food or for love.

In her youth, Pris had a calling to be a nun, but James’s love for her was so strong that she chose a different path, becoming a member of the 3rd Order of Carmelites. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, and she shared that light with everyone she met, embracing them as part of her extended family.

Pris is survived by her loving husband, James J. Rider; her children, Kayla LeJeune (John), Neal Rider (Janet), Cassandra Tokars (Thomas), Tonya Langlinais (J.D.), Blane Rider (Melise), and Shane Rider (Claire); 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson, Patrick Nicholas Rider.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 PM on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, with Father Keith Pellerin serving as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home, 4321 Lake Street, on the evening of Wednesday, May 15, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a rosary being recited at 6:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Thursday morning at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church at 11:30 AM until the start of the funeral mass at 1:30 PM.
Due to her love for LSU, Purple & Gold dress is encouraged for the visitation… GEAUX TIGERS!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Therese Little Flower Lay Carmelite Community #1916, 1404 W. Dumbarton Dr., Lake Charles, LA 70605, a cause that was dear to Pris’s heart.
