Raymond Hurst

August 25, 1936 — July 26, 2021

Raymond Hurst, 84, died peacefully at home in Lake Charles, LA on July 26, 2021.

Mr. Hurst was born on August 25, 1936 in a house on a country lane in Loco, Oklahoma to Garrett and Ollie Lawrence Hurst.  He started school in a one room schoolhouse in rural Oklahoma.  He graduated from Velma-Alma High School in Velma, OK in 1954.  He earned a degree in Civil Engineering from LSU.  He was a member of the Tau Beta Phi Honorary Engineering Society.  He was a Navigator in the U.S. Air Force 44th Air Refueling Squadron of the Strategic Air Command, and a Civil Engineer with the Federal Highway Administration in the Department of Transportation.

He was Grand Knight of the Father Nudd Council Knights of Columbus in Chantilly, Virginia, and joined the 4th Degree there.  He was Grand Knight of the OLQH Council 4562 and Faithful Navigator in Msgr. Cramers Assembly in Lake Charles.  He held all offices of the Council and Assembly except Treasurer and Financial Secretary.  He was President of the Saint Charles/Raintree Homeowners association.  He was a faithful member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, where he was an Extraordinary Minister of Communion.  He enjoyed playing golf and bowling.  He and Mary enjoyed traveling both abroad and in the states.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his wife of over 60 years, Mary Alice Carrier Hurst; his daughters, Elizabeth McClelland (Chris) of Edgerly, LA, and Alice Hurst; two grandchildren, Robert and Mary Alice Sibigtroth; and two brothers, Clyde Hurst of Waurika, OK, and Ralph (Hannelore) Hurst of Santa Fe, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Billy Joe and G.N. Hurst, and his sister Betty Jean Hurst.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.  Msgr. Daniel Torres will preside.  Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the start of the service, with a Rosary being recited at 12:30 PM.

The family would like to express special thanks to St. Joseph Hospice for their compassionate care and support during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
