Rebecca “Rabbit” Jones LaSalle
Rebecca “Rabbit” Jones LaSalle passed away on the evening of April 20, 2019 at the age of 77. The daughter of the late Warren Douglas Jones, Sr. and Evelena Bargeman Jones, Rebecca was born on May 4, 1941 in Oak Grove, Louisiana and most recently resided in Lake Charles.
A lifelong resident of Creole, Louisiana, Rebecca graduated Valedictorian from Audrey Memorial High School in 1959. She worked at Zapata Haynie, South Cameron Memorial Hospital, and for a time she was the owner of a local restaurant, Rabbit’s Place. In addition to her employment, she was active in organizing community events, decorating and catering for special events and adding something special as a seamstress for many brides and wedding parties of family and friends.
An active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Cameron for 63 years, she is most known for being the choir president. Her greatest joy was singing in church. In this role, she wrote songs, organized and hosted many gospel musicals, and started the church’s first youth choir, the Cameron Community Choir, and the singing ensemble, The New Group. Additionally, she served as president of the mission department; founded the Christian Women of Cameron; served as the pastor’s secretary; led the pastor’s aid committee and the church’s hospitality and special events committee; started the annual women’s revival; and was a playwright for the church holiday events. She was also the vice president of choirs for the church’s network, Southwest Missionary Baptist Association, for over 10 years. Mrs. LaSalle will be remembered for her love and devotion to her family and her love of cooking, especially for Sunday gatherings of family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Rebecca was preceded in death by her children, Jeroyd LaSalle and Phyllis Ann LaSalle-Spriggs; and brothers, Warren Jones, Jr. and Gary Jones. She is survived by her children, Cedric LaSalle, Sr., Monica LaSalle Hill, and Tiffany LaSalle (Tracy) Bailey; sister, Allie “Pete” Carter; sisters-in-law, Shirley Jones and Lillie Faye Jones; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; dear aunt, Eula Bartie; sister-friends, MaryAnn January, Ruby Cockrell, and Greta January and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at New Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lake Charles, LA under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. The church will be open for viewing at 9 AM and services will begin at 11:00 AM.
