Rev. John O. Moffett

Rev. John Oliver Moffett, 78, of Sulphur died at 12:45 AM on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 in a local hospital.


Mr. Moffett was born on March 12, 1932 in Shreveport, LA. He lived most of his life in Sulphur. He graduated from Sulphur High School in 1948, attended McNeese State University and graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1952, participated in ROTC while at Tech and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserve. Following active duty serving his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he continued serving the United States Air Force Reserve and was honorably discharged as a Major. He attended and graduated from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Following active military service and graduation from the Seminary he witnessed as a bivocational minister, this included being pastor of Indian Village Baptist Church for 17 years in Kinder, LA.


He was employed by the State of Louisiana as a juvenile probation officer for 25 years. He worked for Volunteers of America and Calcasieu Parish School System. After retirement from Indian Village Baptist Church he became a member of Parkview Baptist Church.


He enjoyed reading his bible and sharing his love for Our Lord and Savior, spending time with his family and gardening and traveling. He was very proud of his grandchildren.


He is survived by his wife, Arline Porter Moffett; daughter, Robin Lee Moffett of Garland, TX; a brother, Jerry Gilbert Moffett and wife Hilda of Conroe, TX; stepdaughters, Carrie Porche and husband Francis and Mary Teer Clements all of Kinder, LA; stepsons, James D. Porter of Sulphur, LA, and Charles E. Porter and wife Monica of Lake Charles; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry Gilbert Moffett, Sr. and Frances Noah Moffett of Sulphur and a son, John David Moffett of Sulphur.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 6, 2010 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dore Langley will officiate. Burial will be in Hebert Cemetery in Hecker, LA. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until time of services in the funeral home.


Pallbearers will be: James and Charles Porter, Brandon Porche, Dennis Durden, Jimmy Augustine, and Terry Marcantel.
