Richard "Dick" Wayne Hopes, 70, of Moss Bluff, LA died at 10:45 PM on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at a local hospital.
Born November 15, 1940 in Chardon, OH, Mr. Hopes was a 1958 graduate of Rock Creek High School, attended Ohio State University, and was a 1961 graduate of Moeler College in Cleveland, OH. He has lived in Moss Bluff for the past thirty-seven years and retired in 2006 from Olin / Lyondell Chemical, where he was as a trainer. Mr. Hopes was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Charles, where he served as a deacon and usher, and was a member of the Men's Breakfast Club. During his earlier years, he was a coach in the Moss Bluff Girls Softball Association and past president of the Sam Houston High School Band Boosters. He volunteered along with his wife for the building of Millennium Park and Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Bayou Promenaders. His passion was for woodworking making many pull toys that he donated around the world. Mr. Hopes was a member and past officer of the Lake Charles Woodworkers Club. Most recently, he enjoyed activities and playing Bingo at the Moss Bluff Senior Center.
Mr. Hopes is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, June S. Hopes of Moss Bluff; children, Kerry Hopes Peterson of Roswell, NM, Todd Hopes of Houston, TX, and Penny Hopes of Lake Charles, LA; brother, Terry Hopes and wife Linda of Eugene, OR; and grandchildren, John Hopes of Houston, TX, and Bryce and Zachary Peterson of Roswell, NM.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Lake Charles Woodworker's Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or the Memorial Garden at First Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to express a special word of thanks to Dr. Sandra Bruno for her excellent care.
His memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Fred Seay will officiate. Burial will follow at a later date in Union Cemetery in Rock Creek, OH. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
