Richard M. Flanagan

June 22, 1932 — May 30, 2012

Richard Marshall "Dick" Flanagan, 79, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at his residence, with his loving family at his side.


Born in Bowling Green, South Carolina to Robert Speight and Merle Riddle Flanagan, Mr. Flanagan served his country in the United States Air Force in Korea from 1951 until 1955. He attended Clemson University, graduating in 1959. Mr. Flanagan was a traffic engineer for the Louisiana State Department of Transportation and Development from 1959 until 1985 and for the Calcasieu Parish Engineering Division from 1993 until 2003. He was a member of the Institute of Traffic Engineering. Mr. Flanagan was an ordained elder and faithful member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. He loved to hunt, fish and was an avid sports fan.


Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Lillie Andrus "Jody" Flanagan of Lake Charles; sons, Lloyd Speight Flanagan and wife Donna of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas and David Richard Flanagan and wife Millissa of Newburgh, Indiana; daughter, Ginger Yvonne Keenan and husband Charles, also of Lake Charles; seven grandchildren, Erin Canik and husband Stephen, Ryan Keenan, Sean Flanagan, Ben Flanagan, Will Flanagan, Kaila Flanagan and Shane Flanagan; and six great grandchildren, Madalyn Grayce, Kensley, Cole, Skylar, Tucker, and Murphy.


He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George Robert Flanagan and James Franklin Flanagan; and one sister, Margaret Marie "Totsie" Newton.


Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Pastor Nanette Cagney will officiate. Interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the funeral home and Saturday from 9:00 AM until time of service in the church.


The family would like to express their grateful appreciation for the compassionate care given their loved one to Dr. Ivo Tremont, Dr. Ashwin Viswanathan, Dr. James Gaharan, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice.
