Robert Bob G. Dunn

Robert Guy "Bob" Dunn died on Monday, January 30, 2012, surrounded by family and friends in a circle of love. He was born on February 12, 1930, in Lake Charles to Freda and William J. Dunn, Sr. He grew up in Lake Charles attending Central School and graduating from Lake Charles High School in 1947. In 1952, he graduated from LSU with a degree in Business Administration and entered the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was in Company K of the 31st Infantry Regiment of the 7th Division and fought on the front lines in several of the major battles of the Korean War. Later he served for twelve years in the LA National Guard as a captain and company commander.



Having served his country, Bob worked with his father at Dunn Motor Company in Lake Charles. He studied accounting at McNeese State University and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1957. In 1966, he was a founding partner of Theriot, Milford Dunn, which became one of the largest private CPA firms in the state. As the tax specialist for the firm, he enjoyed figuring out the intricacies of the tax code to benefit his clients while maintaining the highest ethical standards. In 1995, he and Sara Roberts formed Dunn Roberts and Company from which he retired in 2010. He was appointed and served on the Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals for four years. In 2009, he was recognized by the Louisiana Society of CPAs for 50 years of service to his profession.


In 1962, Bob married the love of his life, Marilyn Strait. For forty-nine years, their relationship reflected mutual respect, complete devotion, and enjoyment of life. Bob adored his three daughters and his two sons-in-law. His seven grandchildren brought him even more joy. Through the years, Bob and Marilyn have been blessed with the love and companionship of many dear friends.


Bob was active in the community, serving on the boards and as President of Campfire, the Lake Charles Symphony, Calcasieu Kiwanis Club, and the local chapter of the LA Society of CPAs in addition to other organizations. He was an Eagle Scout and a 32nd degree Mason. Bob was a dedicated member of the YMCA "family" of runners for more than 30 years.


Bob was baptized in First Presbyterian Church and in 1959, he became a charter member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. He was a Deacon and Elder and his dedication to God and his church was shown through the years as he served as Church Treasurer, Sunday School teacher, youth fellowship leader, and chair of numerous committees. He sang in the choir for over 30 years. In 2010, he was named Elder Emeritus for his service to St. Andrew.


Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William J. "Bill" Dunn, Jr. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughters Mindy Williams and husband Sam of Wake Forest, NC, Amy Dunn of Lake Charles, and Jenny Long and husband Jay of Nashville, Tennessee; his sisters-in-law Sandra B. Dunn of Bellevue, Washington, and Dorothy Strait of Lake Charles; and his grandchildren Matthew, Sarah, and Stephen Williams of Wake Forest, NC, Andrew Williams of Lake Charles, and Jack, Luke and Annie Long of Nashville; and his nieces and nephew of Seattle.


The family is most grateful to Dr. Ron Lewis, Jr., the staff of Southern Home Health and Odyssey Hospice, his sitter Carla Stewart, and his church family at St. Andrew for their dedication and loving care of Bob during this past year

.

Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 PM 8:00 PM. A memorial service celebrating the life of Bob Dunn will be Friday at 3:00 PM at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with Pastor Nanette Cagney officiating. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall. His body was donated to science in accordance with his wishes. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one's choice.
