Robert Erwin "Bob" Baker, 89, passed away Friday December 10, 2011in the comfort of his home.
Bob was born in Selma, Alabama on May 21, 1922 and grew up in Anniston, Alabama. He served in the US Army as an infantryman during World War II and was captured during The Battle of the Bulge and was a German Prisoner of War. After the war he returned to Auburn University to finish a degree in engineering. He retired as the Superintendent of Engineering and Maintenance from PPG Industries in Lake Charles. After retirement he became an avid gardener and woodcrafter.
Bob was an active member of St Michael's and All Angels' Episcopal Church and a past member of the vestry and choir. He was involved in numerous community organizations including Kiwanis Club and SCORE.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Erwin Baker and Belle McColl Atkins Baker, and his brother Tod Atkins Baker. Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Virginia Fletcher Baker; children Robert Erwin and Mary Hickman Baker Jr. of Lake Charles, Imogene Baker and John Patrick Konvalinka of Chattanooga, TN, and John Fletcher and Nan Hardee Baker of Baton Rouge; and eight grandchildren Robert Erwin Baker III, John Tod Baker, John Patrick Konvalinka, Jr., Kathleen Konvalinka and Robert Foster Chapman, William Lawson Konvalinka, Virginia Fletcher Konvalinka, Katheryn Ann Baker, and John Fletcher Baker Jr.
Visitation will be Tuesday December 13, 2011 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM at St. Michael's and All Angels' Episcopal Church. Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM. Inurnment will be at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donation to be made to St. Michael's and All Angels' Episcopal Church, American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Hospital, or the charity of your choice.
