Robert Gordon Gordy Owens, Sr.

April 20, 1938 — November 22, 2010

Robert Gordon "Gordy" Owens, Sr., 72, of Lake Charles died on Monday, November 22, 2010, in a local hospital.

Mr. Owens was born in Lake Charles on April 20, 1938, and lived here most of his life. He was a graduate of Lake Charles High School. His most cherished moment as a young man was playing for the Lake Charles High School "Wildcats" 1954 state championship football team. After serving in the US Air Force, Gordon worked for a local insurance company as a programmer. He eventually found his "calling" as a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Deputy under Sheriff Wayne McElveen's administration and proudly served for 20 years.

Gordon never met a stranger and thoroughly enjoyed communicating; whether it was in person, or by telephone, CB radio, ham radio, or computer. He also loved music and was known for sending out daily emails to groups of friends which included a weather report and song of the day. He was involved in his sons' Mid City Little League and found great pleasure in volunteering to help coordinate class reunion events.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 23 years, Shirley Roth Owens of Lake Charles; two sons, Gordy Owens, Jr. of Houston and Alan Owens and wife Pam of The Woodlands, TX; step daughter, Shellie F. Mayfield of Lake Charles; step son, Kevin W. Mayfield and wife Debbie of Pearland, TX; his brother, Jimmy Owens and wife Norma of Glen St. Mary, FL; his sister, Marcia Owens Farber of Lake Charles; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his cocker spaniel, Sir Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oran L. and Rosemary "Tee" Owens; his brother, Dr. Randy Owens; and his son, Michael Joseph Owens.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 27, 2010, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Finers Cryer and Rev. H.L. Collett will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 AM until time of services.
