Robert Lee Ortego was born in Basile, LA on April 29, 1940 to Essie Mae and John E. Ortgeo Sr. He graduated from Basile High School, then earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Northwestern State College, and then his Masters in Education and Administration from McNeese State University.
He was employed with South Cameron High School, where he taught and coached the varsity teams. He later became Assistant Superintendent of Cameron Parish Schools, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the Serra Club, Cowboy Club, Cameron Lions Club, Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, past President of LASE, MSU Alumni Association. He enjoyed Golfing at Mallard Cove Golf Course, fishing, camping, traveling, and above all spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church where he served as an Usher.
He was welcomed into Heaven on July 27, 2021 by his parents and brother, John E. Ortego Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory; his wife of fifty-two years, Patricia Ortego; two sons, Kenton (Cindy) Ortego, Robert B “Robbie” (Julie) Ortego; three grandchildren, Daniel, Alec, and Halle Ortego; a sister, Linda (Nuggie) Italiano and family; sisters in-law, Hilda Ortego and family, Charlotte (John) Collins; and a niece, Lorileigh Duddleston.
The family will welcome friends on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Our Lady of Good Counsel beginning at 9:30am until time of service. A Rosary will be prayed at 11:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial led by Father Paul Jussen will begin at 12pm, with burial to follow at Consolata Cemetery.
The family expresses many thanks to Heart of Hospice, Home Instead, Dr. William G Hebert, St. Patrick Hospital and CornerStone Staff, the friends and neighbors who brought food and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation in his honor to: Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, or MSU Foundation.
