Roe Spencer, 88, died Friday, January 9, 2015 in his residence in Bedford, Texas, with his beloved family by his side. Born in Oakdale, Louisiana, to Monroe Evermont and Wilma Schillings Spencer, Mr. Spencer served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He married Jessie Louise Ayer in May, 1948. After his service, he worked at Cities Service from 1947-1966. During this time, he served as President of the Louisiana State Council of Machinists and was elected to the Police Jury, eventually serving two terms. He joined the International Association of Machinists in 1966 and was elected General Vice President in 1973, where he served until his retirement in 1991. After retirement, he was active in the Masonic organization. He became a Master Mason in 1948 with the Magnolia Lodge 238. He affiliated with the Grapevine Lodge 288 and was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree, Shriner in Ft. Worth Valley, and received the Golden Trowel from the Grapevine Lodge in 2014. He was the embodiment of Matthew 25, as he truly lived, "Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." His compassion and selfless service to others impacted many over his lifetime. Mr. Spencer is survived by his sons, Neal Spencer and wife Patti of Bedford, Texas, and Darrell Spencer and wife Karen of Lake Charles; grandchildren, David Spencer and Kelley Spencer, Carrie Kelly and husband Beaux, Jennifer Jaetzold and husband Cory, and Kevin Spencer and wife Dora; great grandchildren, Ashlynn, Savannah, Lainey, Graeme, Conner Roe, and Dylan; and one sister, Betty Cronin of Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jessie Louise. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2015, at Johnson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 noon until service time.
