Ronald Roy Helmer

March 6, 1937 — September 21, 2017

Ronald Helmer, 80, passed away at a local hospital on September 21, 2017 surrounded by his family. Mr. Helmer was born in Bayou Chicot, LA on March 6, 1937. He honorably and faithfully served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following his discharge from the Army, he moved to Sulphur and began his career with George Theriot’s as advertising manager and later as property manager. He worked for the company for 55 years. Mr. Helmer enjoyed spending his time with his wife and family. His family was his greatest love in life and his grandsons adored him and he them. He was an avid hunter and  treasured times were spent at his hunting lease in West Texas and at their family camp in Bayou Chicot hunting turkey and deer, and fishing.  

 He is survived by his wife, Brenda Theriot Helmer of 35 years; daughter Joni Helmer, son Jon Helmer and wife Julie, and grandsons, Garon, Grant and Gunner Helmer and step-children, Missy Conder and husband Edward of Atlanta, GA, Mimi Kerpoe and husband Mitch of Panama City Beach, FL and George Hyatt and wife Karen of Aurora, CO; step grandchildren, Colton and Megan Kerpoe, Chris Conder, Hunter and Holly Hyatt. He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Bessie Helmer; his sister Shirley Johnson Courtney; and brothers, Laurant and Donald Helmer; and grandson Gavin Helmer.

 His funeral service will be at 10AM on Monday, September 25, 2017 at Johnson-Robison Funeral Home. Reverend John Hoffpauir will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Mimosa Pines North Cemetery under the direction of Johnson-Robison Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 5 PM until 8 PM with visitation continuing on Monday at 9 AM until time of the service.  Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Bayou Chicot. 1042 Dossman Lake Road, St. Landry, LA 71367.
