Russell Paul Varnum

February 20, 1957 — March 30, 2020

Russell Paul Varnum, 63, of Lake Charles passed away in his home March 30, 2020. He was born to Harvey "Bud" and JoAnn Varnum in Long Island, NY and grew up in Medford, NY.

After high school Russell enlisted in the United States Navy. Following his Navy career he moved to Houston, TX and then to Lake Charles, LA. He obtained his nursing degree from SOWELA Technical Community College. Russell enjoyed traveling and was a great snow skier; always going straight for the blue and black slopes. A talented artist and musician, Russell loved playing the guitar and drums. He loved music and had acquired a vast collection of over 500 albums, as well as hundreds of DVDs, CDs, cassettes, and 8-track tapes. An avid reader: Russell enjoyed learning new things and seemed to be interested in everything. He was also a skilled carpenter and handyman. He enjoyed family get togethers and simply hanging out with the family and friends, spending time with his Dad on the farm, and fishing with his brother.

Those left to carry on his legacy are his parents, Bud and JoAnn Varnum; sister, Valerie Walker; and numerous relatives. He was preceded in death by his brother, Roland Varnum.

At the time of Russell's passing, memorial services were not held due to government mandates. A joint memorial service honoring Russell and his parents, Bud and JoAnn Varnum, will be held 1pm, Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Maplewood Church of Christ in Sulphur. Rev. Brian Spicer will officiate. Food and fellowship will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church of your choice.
