Ruth Ella Shuff Ryder

June 8, 1921 — August 25, 2012

Ruth Shuff Ryder, 91, of Lake Charles passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012 in a local healthcare facility.


Mrs. Ryder was a native of Oberlin, LA and was a resident of Lake Charles for the past sixty-five years. Mrs. Ryder was a member of the VFW Auxilary Post 2130, where she held many State, District and local Offices, the Cooties, American Legion Post 1 Auxilary, Our Lady Queen of Heaven Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1785, Council , IBEW Local 861 Auxilary and the Cajun Music Association. Mrs. Ryder was a volunteer at Christus St. Patrick's Hospital and also cooked for the late MSGR Irving DeBlanc when his cook was absent. Mrs. Ryder was Cafeteria Manager at College Oaks Elemetery School and the first Cafeteria Manager at Forest K. White Middle School until her retirement.


The family wishes to specially thank the personnel at Southern Home Health and Home Instead Senior Care, especially Melissa Bengel, Sheila Mayfield, Jordan Folk, Julie Cameron, Hilda Ezell and Anna Tekippe, Landmark of Lake Charles personnel and Brighton Bridge Hospice, Sandi Hebert, MiMi and Melinda Kellar.


Survivors include her sons, SGM (Ret) James R. (Pat) Ryder, Richard Keith Ryder, Sr., of Lake Charles and Randal David (Jennifer) Ryder of Beaumont, TX and her sister, Genny (William Buddy) Dupin of Lake Charles; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell J. (Red) Ryder; son, Roland J. (Blackie) Ryder; father, William Shuff, Sr.; mother, Ella David Shuff; three brothers, Curtis, William and Clifford Shuff and one sister, Lenora Granger.


Funeral services will be at 2:30 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2012 in Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Father John Huckaby will officiate. Interment will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation Monday will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a rosary being recited at 6:00 PM. Visitation Tuesday will be from 11:00 AM until 2:00PM in the funeral home.


Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Doug Ryder, Jeff Ryder, Chad Ryder, Thomas Ryder, Roman Ryder, Jason Ryder and Richard Keith Ryder, Jr.
