Sallye Jean Toniette

Sallye Jean Toniette, M.D. "Dr. T" of Sulphur passed away on August 21, 2015 in West Cal-Cam Hospital. She was a wonderful soul, truly one of the greatest of our community. Sallye was born in Sulphur, LA to Eugene and Sallye Toniette of Sulphur and a lifelong resident of Sulphur. Dr. Sallye Jean Toniette, was a 1946 graduate of Sulphur High School, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA and her Medical Degree from Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans, LA in 1955. Dr. Toniette completed her internship, junior residency, senior residency and her chief residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at Crawford W.L. Hospital of Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She was the first female chief resident at Crawford W. Long Hospital. On August 10, 1959, Dr. Toniette returned to her home of Sulphur, LA and opened her practice." Dr. T" was the first female obstetrics and gynecology specialist in Calcasieu Parish. She stopped delivering babies in December of 1995. A nurse in OB estimated," Dr. T" delivered 10, 000 plus babies. She served on the West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Foundation Board from October 26, 1999 to the time of her death. Her passion for the work of the WCCH Foundation Board was unmatched, but she also had a special interest in the Genesis Therapeutic Riding Center and the special needs children who utilized the facility. "Dr. T" served on the Active Medical Staff until her retirement in December of 2004. She also published U.S. National Library of National Institutes of Health Primary Carcinoma of the Fallopian Tube Medicine in October of 1960. In 2015, West Cal-Cam Hospital dedicated the OBGYN Wing as the Sallye Toniette Women Center. Survivors include all of the babies she delivered as her children; first cousins, Alvin Toniette and wife Tina, Marvin Tanner Mathieu and wife Brenda, Susan Tanner Hawthorne and husband Jim, Sara Tanner Cyr and husband Roger, Sally Tanner Namie and husband Richard, Sandra Tanner Ballew and husband Dale, Marvin Tanner, Jr. and wife Kathleen, Sherrie Tanner Smith and husband Randy, and Laurie Tanner; second cousin, James Toniette and wife Melissa; her aunt, Gloria Tanner; special friends, Buzz and Martha Sarver; and her furry babies, Ms. Kitty, Scruffy, Prissy, Lucky Boy/Girl, T-Cal, Cutie Pie, Lakeyn and Marty-Buzz. She was preceded in death by her parents; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 24, 2015 at 11 A.M. at Henning United Memorial Methodist Church in Sulphur with Rev. Tracy Mackenzie and Rev. Ellen Alston officiating. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Carlyss under the direction of Johnson and Robison Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 12-8 P.M. at Johnson and Robison Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Monday, August 24, 2015 at the funeral home from 8 A.M. until time of procession for the church. Pall-bearers, who are all people "Dr. T" delivered, will be Ben Bourgeois, Dr. Scott Bergstedt, Elis Hassin, Paul Phillips, Jerry Keeley, Sam Breaux, Will Tom Drost, and George Clement. Honorary pall-bearers will be Jack Hebert and Dr. Ben Darby. Dr. T's favorite saying was "ALL MY BABIES ARE BEAUTIFUL."
