Sam J. Reed, Jr.

January 9, 1930 — May 29, 2024

Sam J. Reed, 94, passed away on May 29, 2024, in a local hospital with his family by his side. Sam was a native of Oberlin and  a 1947 graduate of Oberlin High School.  He had been a resident of Lake Charles since 1956.  He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where he served in the Knights of Columbus Counsel # 1207 as a Fourth Degree Knight.  He was employed by Cities Service for 26 years and retired in 1983.  Sam was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was an active member of OCAW (Oil & Chemical Atomic Worker’s) Union Local 4-500.  He was a cancer survivor, being an active participant in Camp Bluebird where he assisted the staff in building numerous Bluebird projects for the patients. Sam was an avid deer hunter enjoying the outdoors with his family and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife, Rena Bergeron Reed; son, Mike Joseph Reed, stepdaughters, Stephanie Bergeron Guillory and Angelle Bergeron Larson; stepson, Bryan Bergeron (Jill); step-grandchildren, Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Landry Guillory, II (Heather), Michelle Duggan Evans (Jeff), Ashley Duggan Smith(Albert), Megan Rion(Derek), Morgan Rion Eldridge (Bobby), Jessica Bergeron Steech (Wesley) and Jileen Bergeron Heath (Brett), and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam J. Reed, Sr. and Gertie Prather Reed; brothers, Jerald( Jerry) Reed and Dennis Reed; sister, Doris Reed Schoen; niece, Katherine Reed and stepdaughter,  Renee Bergeron Duggan.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 1st, 2024 at The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.   Father Joseph Caraway will officiate.  Interment services with honors will follow at Consolata Cemetery.  Visitation Friday will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a rosary service beginning at 6:00 PM.

Mr. & Mrs. Reed have been advocating, supporting and donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital since the early 90’s. Please consider donations in his memory at stjude.org.
