Sammy George Samohyl passed away Saturday, August 3, 2024. He was born on October 3, 1934, in Wharton, Texas, to Sam Samohyl and Ethel (Cox) Samohyl.
After graduating from Wharton High School, he enlisted in the Navy on October 6, 1953. He completed his training at the Naval Recruit Training Center in San Diego as Apprentice Chief Petty Officer of Company 281. He served aboard the U.S.S. Hanna - DE 449. Between November 1954 and July 1957 Hanna made three deployments to the western Pacific. On leave in December of 1955, he married Martha Ann Kachtik of Buckholts, Texas. On October 1, 1957 he was honorably discharged as GM2, Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer.
After his military service he and Martha moved back to Texas where he roughnecked in the Texas oilfields. In 1962 he began a 30 year career as a mechanic for Texas Eastern Gas Pipeline, working from Ragley to Houma to Grand Chenier, retiring in 1992.
Most of his retirement was spent watching his two granddaughters play volleyball and basketball for many years. He enjoyed keeping the refs in line and keeping score even when there was no "official" scoreboard.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Kachtik Samohyl of Sulphur, his daughter Tenia Samohyl Fuselier and her husband Joel Fuselier of Lake Charles, granddaughters Emma Fuselier of Austin, TX and Jordan Fuselier of Broomfield, CO.
