Sanford "Sam" Broussard

Sanford Sam Broussard, 97 of Sulphur passed away on July 11, 2012. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10a.m. at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Sulphur with Father Edward Richard officiating. A reception will follow at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in the parish hall at 1700 Maplewood Dr. Sulphur, LA. Sam was a native of Welsh and a long-time Sulphur resident. He was a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church where he served as an usher and belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 3015. As a young man, while working in Hackberry, he was a quarter mile jockey for 6 years. He worked as a welder at Olin Mathieson for 35 years, the last five as maintenance supervisor. Sam was a 63 year member of the Iron Workers Local 678 (as of 2003), a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion and the Recreational Commissioner for Playgrounds District 2 Ward 4. While being commissioner he helped design and build the back 9 holes at Frasch Golf Course. Sam also served on the board and helped build Bayou Oakes Country Club. He won Club Champion for low net at Bayou Oaks in 1995 and won Club Champion for first flight and low net in 1977. Sam coached girls softball teams, loved hunting, fishing and golfing. He served in the US Army during World War II where he was a Staff Sergeant and Acting 1st Sergeant Company Headquarters. He also served from 1945 -1947 in the Asian Pacific. Sam was born on August 22, 1914 in Welsh, LA. He married Louella Judice of New Iberia, LA in 1937. He is survived by his five daughters, Janice Jan Scharrier and husband, Hershal of Sulphur, Judy Boudreaux and husband, Gary of El Paso, TX, Sammie Ross and husband, Ed of Dallas, TX, Mary Jo Broussard of Mobile, AL, and Debbie Athey and husband, Mark of Thornhill, TN; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louella Judice; son, Sanford Jr. TBoy Broussard at age 4; parents, Phelias Broussard and Emma Broussard of Hackberry, LA; brothers, Howard, Mellon, Nolan, Leonard and Eugene; and sisters, Zula, Winnie, Bernice, Libby and Velta. In lieu of flowers memorial envelopes will be available at Prompt Succor Catholic Church for donations to be made to apply to a new church organ.
