Rueben Scott McClain, age 79, of Lake Charles passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. “Scotty” was loved by all that knew him and will be missed by many.
Born September 27, 1938 in Smackover, Arkansas he excelled in academics and sports at an early age. Named Class President and Mr. Smackover High, he lead his high school track team to the State Championship his senior year.
Scotty’s life, indeed his identity, was changed forever when he received a scholarship to play football at LSU. A member of the historic 1958 National Championship team, his #83 will be forever memorialized on film running alongside and throwing up his arms to signal a touchdown during Billy Cannon’s famous Halloween night punt return in Tiger Stadium. While at LSU, Scotty made lifelong friendships.
Scotty will also be remembered for his love of tennis. He was a founding member and past President of the Lake Charles Racquet Club. Other accomplishments include being named President of the local LSU Alumni and Bar Association. He practiced law for over 40 years with partner and friend, “Robbie” Morgan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, coaching his boys when they were young and was even a gentleman rancher for a time.
He was preceded in death by his parents Vera and Rueben L. McClain and his brother Kenneth. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years Susie Zimmerman McClain; sons Craig McClain, Chris McClain and Kevin McClain; step-daughters Julie Goehring and Jessica Stutes; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Julie McClain and Cheri Childers; and former wife and mother of his sons, Janice Brashier.
Memorial services will be at 6:00 PM Friday, October 13, 2017 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Ronnie Estes will officiate. Friends will gather at the funeral home from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
