Sharon Stein

December 27, 1944 — January 17, 2018

Frances “Sharon” Stein, aged 73, a longtime resident of Sulphur, LA, died peacefully on 1-17-2018 after an extended illness.

Sharon was born December 27, 1944 in Jennings, LA, to the late Francis and Lillian (Boulet) Atkinson of Indian Bayou.  Sharon attended Sulphur High School and married the boy next door, David James Stein, and together they raised two children.  Many weekends were spent with family at the Gulf of Mexico enjoying a summer camp the couple built together at Holly Beach.

A graduate of Sowela Technical Institute in Computer Science, Sharon frequently worked the voting polls in Calcasieu parish and once held a short stint as a private investigator.  However, while she enjoyed the intrigue that accompanied the job, she found she didn’t care for the long, late hours of a stake out.

She did enjoy sewing, making flower arrangements, and painting, and in later years, collecting jewelry.  In fact, she loved QVC so much, at one point family members thought an intervention might be in order!  She especially enjoyed her home in Sulphur and was fond of planting fruit trees in different places around the property.

Later in life, while living in assisted care at Stonebridge Place, she enjoyed playing dominos with friends and making colorful crochet scarfs to sell and give as gifts.  In 2015 she had an exceptionally fun time entering the Stonebridge Halloween Costume contest as voodoo priestess Marie Laveau! So arresting was her costume that she went on to place in the city-wide SPAR Halloween costume contest as well. The following year, she was deemed a Duchess for the community’s annual Mardi Gras celebration. Sharon attended Olivet Baptist Church in Sulphur.

She is survived by her son Courtney Stein, her daughter Anja Stein Richard, and husband JR., three grandchildren T.J. and wife (Leslie) Richard; Lacey and husband, (Preston ) McPayne, and Melody Richard; four great grandchildren, Austin Guimbellot, Ethan Richard, Colby Snyder and Paisley McPayne; one half sister, Connie Atkinson, two step-sisters, Delores Boudreaux and Alice Maffay, and one step-brother, Percy Monceaux. Proceeded in death by her parents, and her sister, Donna Atkinson Lyons.

Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 on 1-27-2018 at Olivet Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 601 Patch St. Sulphur, LA.

Memorial gifts in Sharon Stein’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Louisiana Chapter, http://www.alz.org/la or the charity of your choice.
