Shawnette Chenier

December 4, 1964 — July 8, 2022

Mary Shawnette Chenier, gained her wings on Friday, July 8, 2022 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Shawnette was born on December 4, 1964 to Merrick and Naomi Chenier in Lake Charles, LA where she was a lifetime resident.

At a young age, Shawnette accepted Christ while attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where she was a lifetime member. Shawnette was a graduate of Washington High School class of 82! She birthed three children, however, her mothering reached well beyond her own children. Throughout her career as a tax preparer, she ensured access and competent tax servicing to her community. She was known as a “shoot it straight from the hip” type of person and spared no words when interacting with family and friends, always adding a “that’s on y’all” for a little seasoning. Whether you found her at Bingo, card games, or in the neighborhood selling her Famous Frozen Cups, she was always the one to call on when someone needed honest advice, genuine love, or a smile.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Merrick and Naomi Chenier, one sister Bridgette Dupas, and grandchildren, Kash Wright, and Braydon Wright.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Joseph “Jay Tee” Chenier, Rita Wright, Chris “Poppa” Wright, all of Lake Charles, and Jordan Jude Chenier (Favorite Son) of Opelousas, LA; her siblings, Ben (Ann) Chenier of Waukegan, IL, Victoria Pierre of Lake Charles, LA, Jude Chenier (Genet) of Needville, Tx, Marie Chenier (Wayne Eggins) of Lake Charles, LA; and her best friend, Loretta Gallien of Lake Charles, LA; her seven grandchildren, Anthony, Ky’Mani, Keenan, Kaislynn, Dylan, Aubrey, and Kharter; and a host of godchildren (too many to name), extended family, friends, bingo buddies, and Class of 82.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Reverend Rommel Tolentino will serve as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday, from 9:00 AM until leaving in procession to the church, with a Rosary being recited at 11:00 AM.
