Sherry Lee Haley

December 25, 1943 — March 25, 2022

Sherry Lee Landreneau Haley joined our Lord and Savior, March 25, 2022. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Sherry was born on December 25, 1943 in Reddell, Louisiana, to Lee and Irene Landreneau. She met the love of her life, Lane Lee Haley, and they married January 26, 1963. Sherry and Lane have three beautiful children, Michael Lane, Susan Irene and Douglas Lee.

Sherry attended McNeese State University where she received her RN in 1978. She began her nursing career at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. During her long career at the hospital, she held positions as head nurse in the emergency room, the emergency administrative director, and the assistant director of nursing. In 1987, she became Vice President of Patient Care Services, a position she held for almost twenty years. Sherry served on the Louisiana Board of Nursing as president from 1993 to 1998. During her time as president of the board, she also chaired the committee for prescriptive authority. While serving on the committee, she became a voice and advocate for nurses statewide as she fought and succeeded in helping to push through legislation granting prescriptive authority for advanced practical nurses. In 1998, she obtained her Master of Science degree in Nursing Administration and Adult Health. Throughout her career, she inspired and mentored numerous nurses. Sherry retired from Memorial Hospital in 2005 and began a second career as a hospice nurse for Odyssey Healthcare of Lake Charles. She brought dignity and respect to her patients and comfort and support to their families. Sherry was the 2021 recipient of the prestigious Daisy “Lifetime Achievement” award in nursing. After retiring from Odyssey, Sherry learned to play bridge and was an active member of the Lake Charles Bridge Club.

Sherry was dedicated, devoted wife of almost 60 years to her husband, Lane. She was a loving, supportive mother to her three children. She loved her family deeply. There is, however, no word in the English language that can adequately describe the love she had for her five grandchildren, Andrew Michael, Jacob Lane, Liam Randal, Carsyn Claire and Mason Douglas. Ice cream for breakfast (“with straight sprinkles, Gram”), trips to New York, Galveston, water parks and movies, and a favorite of all five grandchildren, “Gram Camp,” are only some of the ways Sherry spread love and happiness while creating lifetime memories with her grandchildren. She LOVED being their Gram.

Sherry is survived by her husband, Lane Haley, of Lake Charles; brother Clint Landreneau, of Lake Charles; children, Michael (Jennifer) of Ruston, LA; Susan (Michael) of Lake Charles; and Doug (Courtney) of Iowa, LA; grandchildren Andrew, Jacob, Liam, Carsyn, and Mason.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the many doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas, for the exceptional care they gave Sherry. Her determination to live as long as she could with cancer allowed her to establish meaningful relationships with all of her grandchildren. The love for her family, especially her grandchildren, was the driving force in her beating cancer for nearly twenty years.
