Shirley Long Burnett

July 6, 1939 — December 30, 2015

Shirley Long Burnett, 76, a resident of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 5:50 AM in a Lake Charles hospital. She was born at Georgetown, Louisiana on July 6, 1939.

 

Shirley graduated from Winnfield High School in 1958 and then attended LSU in Baton Rouge. She and her husband lived in a number of states, due to his job transfers, and moved to Lake Charles from Brownsville, Texas in 1994. Shirley was a devoted member of Apostolic Temple in Lake Charles. Teaching of children in Church Sunday School was special to her. She also enjoyed teaching of special education students. She was the founder and director of a 50 child day care in Jefferson City, Missouri. Also, she was an accomplished seamstress and calligrapher. The collecting of dolls was a favorite hobby.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years, Travis L. Burnett, of Moss Bluff; three sons, Michael and wife Janet of Houston, TX, Gregory and wife Sonya of Temple, TX, and Steven and wife Helga of Greenville, SC; two brothers, Bobby Long of Winnfield, and Billy Long of Baton Rouge; as well as six grandchildren.

 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Reginald and Beatrice Long of Winnfield, Louisiana.

 

Her funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Apostolic Temple located at 2711 West Prien Lake Road, Lake Charles, Louisiana. Officiating will be Rev. Ricky Treece, Rev. Donnell Spurgeon, and Rev. Jordan Anderson. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley, LA, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation Friday, January 1, 2016 will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and Saturday from 12:00 PM until the time of service at the church.
