Shirley Roth Owens

August 16, 1939 — April 26, 2022

It is with great loss and heavy hearts that the family of Shirley F. Roth Mayfield Owens announces her passing on April 26, 2022 at the age of 82 after a short illness.

Shirley F. Roth was born on August 16, 1939 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Robert F. Roth and Lovice L. Caldwell Roth. From the beginning, Shirley was full of life and lived it to its fullest. She was a proud 1958 graduate of LaGrange Sr. High School where she was a Gatorette, drummer and cheerleader. Her classmates, many of whom have kept in touch with her since elementary school, knew her as a “go-getter” who enjoyed serving on class dance committees. Upon graduation she remained an active member with the reunion committee. Shirley loved staying in contact with them through the years and considered them extended family.

Shirley was a hard worker who felt that any job was worth doing well. During her adult life she worked at Commercial Securities, Lake Charles Stevedores, the Greater Lake Charles Water Company and for the City of Lake Charles as a buyer in the purchasing department where she eventually retired from.

When not working, Shirley had many hobbies and always liked to stay busy. She enjoyed art, especially painting, reading, visiting with family and friends on the phone, watching television, playing on the computer and listening to music, especially the “Oldies”. Shirley enjoyed solving daily cross word puzzles over the phone with her Aunt Janette. Shirley was a sports fan with baseball and golf being her favorite. She never passed up an opportunity to watch her two favorite teams, the LSU Tigers and the New Orleans Saints. She had extensive knowledge about the rules of baseball and enjoyed watching little leagues and even coached her daughter, Shellie’s, softball team. She taught Sunday school in her earlier years and more recently enjoyed watching virtual services from Church of the King with Pastor Todd Schumacher, who she adored. One thing Shirley found that brought her peace was looking into the clouds to see what objects they made. Her favorite thing to find in the clouds were angels; she saw them as watching over and protecting those she loved.

Shirley was a very special lady with much enjoyment in life. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by those dearest to her. Especially for her tenacity as she was a breast cancer survivor.

Left behind to cherish her memory are daughter and best friend, Shellie F. Mayfield of Lake Charles; daughter of the heart, Shannon Thibodeaux of Lake Charles; son, Kevin W. Mayfield (Debbie) of Pearland, TX; sister, Lisa R. Rieger of Austin, TX; and brothers, Allan “Bimbo” Roth (Janet) and Lee Roth of Lake Charles. The family she created will continue on through her two granddaughters, Tiffany Laverell (Justin) and Brooke Weddle (Bradley) all of Angleton, TX and her great grandchildren Ashlyn, Peyton and Westin Laverell and Kennedy Weddle.

Shirley rests in Heaven with her parents, husband, Robert Gardon Owens and cocker spaniel, Sir Oliver.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Johnson Funeral Home from 10am to 1pm. Funeral Services will begin 1pm at Johnson Funeral Home led by Pastor Todd Schumacher. She will be laid to rest at Highland Memory Gardens.
