Spencer G. "Spence" Tiller

October 22, 1930 — December 5, 2021

Spencer G. “Spence” Tiller, 91, of Lake Charles passed away Sunday, December 05, 2021, at home with his wife by his side.

Mr. Tiller was born and raised in Logansport, TX.  He served in the United States Army for four years as a Sharpshooter and later reenlisted to officer.  He studied at Louisiana State University and, following his military service, earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at Stephen F. Austin State University.  Mr. Tiller began his career in drafting and design, eventually finding a home with A. W. Chesterton Company.  As a  well-liked, well-respected top salesman there for almost 40 years, he was awarded “World’s Greatest Salesman,” as well as countless other awards and trips through the years.  Early in the course of his career, he discovered a need for Industrial products and began a Mechanical Seals and Packaging company in his garage.  As demand grew, he expanded to a storefront location on Common Street.  His credibility, dependability and personality were the bedrock of his success.  He was a practical joker, loved to see people smile and hear them laugh.  He was a runner well into his seventies, covering twenty miles daily.  He also enjoyed fishing, sharing his passion with his family on weekend and offshore adventures.  Mr. Tiller was grateful for the blessing of his wife and the opportunity to enjoy his retirement traveling with her.  He will be most remembered as funny, wise, generous, and quick-witted—sometimes sporting a gruff exterior, but always kind-hearted, as evidenced by his soft spot for cats.

He leaves to honor his memory his wife of 24 years, Roxanne Rougeau of Lake Charles; two daughters, Pepi Tiller Webster (Paul) of Biloxi, MS, and Stephanie Tiller Mixon (Timothy) of Moss Bluff; stepson, Alex Boling of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren, Nichlas Manuel of Gulf Shores, AL, Nikki Mixon Gilley (Evan) and Matthew David Mixon (Jenna), both of Moss Bluff; three great grandchildren, Maci, Hadleigh and Avery Gilley; brother-in-law, Deryl Rougeau (Yvonne); sister-in-law, Mayna Rougeau of  Lake Charles and dear friends, Richard and Debbie Ott.

He was preceded in death by parents, Leo Hobson Tiller and Daisy Bell Errington, and son, Steve Tiller.

Memorial services will be at 5:00 PM Friday, December 10, 2021, at University Baptist Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Family and friends will gather in his honor Friday from 3:00 PM until the time of service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Disabled Veterans, Salvation Army or the Sierra Club.
