Our Heavenly Father called home Stephen Wayne Cooper, 72, of Lake Charles on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 while in his home with family and friends present. Born in Lake Charles, he was reared in Jennings and was a graduate of Jennings High School and McNeese State University. Wayne retired from Conoco as a Chemist in 1993. After his retirement, he coached at St. Louis Catholic High School and other area schools for several years. He additionally coached Girls Softball in Sulphur for fifteen years and also worked with Special Olympics. Wayne served as CCD Director at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Sulphur for several years as well as taught CCD at other area churches in the Diocese. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish and prior at St. Theodore Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharist Minister as well as taught CCD. Wayne loved working with the youth in their confirmation classes. Wayne is survived by his wife Joyce Newman Cooper; three daughters, Lisa Sonnier and husband Eddie from Carlyss, Christine Smith and husband Rusty from League City, TX, and Tricia Cooper from Louisville, KY; one son, Randel Trahan from Lake Charles; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Patrick Cooper and wife Genny from Baton Rouge, LA, and Gregory Cooper and wife Clarie from Sulphur, LA; one sister, Darlene Gary and husband Steve from Broussard, LA and his sister-in-law, Marion Cooper from Sulphur, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Verna Lasserre Cooper and a brother Michael Lynn Cooper. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Reverend Whitney Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Friday and from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM Saturday in the funeral home. A Catholic Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Friday.
