Steven Douglas Kohler

Steven Douglas Kohler, 64, formerly of Lake Charles, passed away Oct. 18, 2014 in the comfort of his Conroe, Texas home. A native of Lake Charles, Steve was born Aug. 18, 1950 to Haley "Kay" and Lela Black Kohler. He was a graduate of LaGrange High School, class of 1968. Following graduation, he studied at McNeese State University, where he received a degree in wildlife management. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy at duty stations of Bainbridge, Md., and Corpus Christi, Texas. Steve was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the owner of Southern Traditions, Inc. hunting camp at Goose Lake in Carlyss, La for over 10 years. He was a prolific writer, with several articles published in Outdoor Life and Field & Stream magazines. Steve had a great love of sports, but his true passion was always baseball. He was on a state championship baseball teams with Little league, Babe Ruth and American Legion. After receiving his teaching certification at McNeese, he taught several years at St. Louis High School Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Lela and Haley Kohler; and nephew, Dustin Merritt. Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his loving wife of 27 years, Linda Morein Kohler; children, Steven Douglas Kohler II, Kyle Laughlin Kohler and Mary Allison Kohler; siblings, Sandra Earthman (Robert), Karl Kohler (Shelia), Michael Kohler (Elaine) and Linda Bonner; cousin, John Dudney; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside military honors will be at Houston National Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 27, at 11:15 AM. A gathering of Steve's family and friends will take place at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday October 28, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM. A time of sharing memories of Steve will follow at 6:30 PM.
