Steven Lawrence Nelands

Steven Lawrence Nelands, 56, passed away Thursday December 31, 2015 at a local hospital after a brief illness.

Steven was a native of Lake Charles and longtime resident of Lafayette. He was a 1978 graduate of LaGrange Senior High School, where he played football, and was a member of the French Club and FCA. He was an Eagle Scout and a counselor at Camp Edgewood for two summers. In 1976 he went to Philadelphia to the Eucharistic Congress. Steven was employed in the grocery business for most of his life, having worked for Weingarten and Safeway in Lake Charles and Fleming Wholesale and Wal-Mart in Lafayette.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Meaux Nelands, daughter, Julie Elizabeth Nelands, and son, Anthony Joseph Nelands; all of Lafayette, parents Rufus “Buster" and Margorie Prudhomme Nelands of Lake Charles; brother, Mark (Karen) Nelands of Hayes; two sisters, Denise (Huey) Huval of Kennesaw, GA and Deborah (George) Andrus of Sulphur; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 2:30 PM on Sunday January 3, 2016 at Johnson Funeral Home. A Rosary led by the Catholic Daughters, Our Lady of Fatima Chapter 1506, will be at 2:30 PM followed by a memorial service officiated by Deacon Ray Menard at 3:00 Sunday. Inurnment services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday January 6, 2016 at Consolata Cemetery with Father Emanuel Tanu officiating.

The family would like to thank all of the Doctors and the ICU staffs at Lake Area Medical Center and Christus St Patrick’s Hospital for all the care and compassion extended to Steven and his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contribution be made to assist in Steven’s final expenses.
