Steven Matte

Steven Matte, 59, of Lake Charles, passed away at 9:25 AM on Thursday March 10, 2022 surrounded by  family and friends.

Steven was born on December 5, 1962 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Leon Joseph and Barbara Ann Theriot Matte. He graduated from LaGrange High School in 1980.

Steven worked for Lafayette Drug Company for 30 years as a salesman and a regional manager. When he retired, Steven decided retirement wasn’t for him. He went on to finish his career at Community Coffee Company, where he was employed for five years. Anyone who knew “Big Steve” knows that he always had a story or a joke to tell. He loved making people laugh, and anytime you encountered him, you were sure to leave with a smile.

When his sons were young, he loved coaching and watching Little League Baseball. In later years, his passion for LSU Football emerged and he followed them faithfully. More recently his greatest joy was his family, most of all, his six grandchildren.

Steven was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Ann Theriot Matte. Those left to honor and cherish his memories are his beloved wife of 40 years, Mary Beth Wisby Matte; children, two sons and a daughter, Cory (Kelly) Matte, Cade (Jennifer) Matte and Cayla (Justin) McQuiston; grandchildren Madison, Callen, Brennan, Jordan, Ava Kate and Gus; father, Leon Joseph Matte; two sisters, Diana Lyn Felps (Norwood) and Marla Matte Cradeur (Chad) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at University Baptist Church, 4505 Lake St., Lake Charles, on Tuesday March 15, 2022. Graveside services will be immediately following the gathering at Highland Memory Gardens with Deacon Harold Nixon officiating, all under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.

Honorary Pallbearer will be “Big Steve’s” brother from another mother (his cousin) Mark Matte.
