Sybil Miley Stokes

December 17, 1931 — February 29, 2012

Sybil Miley Stokes, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on February 29, 2012.


A lifelong resident of Central Louisiana, Mrs. Stokes graduated from Louisiana Baptist College in 1952 and taught Algebra and English at Oakdale High School for 32 years. An energetic and caring teacher, she then served as both English Teacher and Choir Director at Forest Hill Neighborhood School where she is honored with an annual student scholarship in her name. Mrs. Stokes completed a total of 40 years in the classroom.


A talented pianist and music lover, Mrs. Stokes donated her services as church pianist to numerous churches throughout Central Louisiana. She served her home church, First Baptist Church of Oakdale, for many years as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Teacher and was treasurer of Amiable Baptist Cemetery Association from 1991 - 2005.


Mrs. Stokes is survived by her husband of 61 years, W. P. "Whit" Stokes, Sr. of Lake Charles; four children, Dr. W. Perry Stokes, Jr. and wife, Dana, of New Iberia, Mrs. Diane Stewart and husband, Lawrence, of Houston, Texas, Dr. Lisa McBride and husband, R. Adam, of Lake Charles, and Mrs. Sally Goodger and husband, William, of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Mrs. Norleene Dumesnil of Bastian, Virginia; 13 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaiah J. and Alice R. Miley of Calcasieu, Louisiana.


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 2, 2012 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Luke Liechty will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM following the service at Amiable Baptist Church Cemetery in Glenmora, LA where the Rev. Calvin Cantrell will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
