Thelma Jean Woodard

December 29, 1931 — March 14, 2013

Thelma Jean Hurley Woodard, 81, of Lake Charles passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013 in a local hospital.


Mrs. Woodard was born, raised and educated in Arkansas. She lived forty years in California where she managed a salon and worked as a hairdresser. She also lived twenty-five years in Oklahoma and the past four years in Lake Charles. She enjoyed hunting and playing Basketball in her younger years having been offered a scholarship to play college ball. She took great pride in her family, especially in spoiling her grandchildren. Mrs. Woodard was a member of Enterprise Boulevard Church of Christ, Scribes and 39ers. She will be most remembered as a woman of strong Christian faith.


She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Gary Curtis Woodard and wife Judy of Winters, CA; one daughter, Deborah Jean Doucet and husband Ray of Lake Charles; self-adopted daughter, Peggy Christ and husband Tom of Wills Point, TX; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Mae Dunworth and husband Bill of Sacramento, CA and many lifelong friends.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Clinton Woodard; two brothers, Claude Hurley, Jr. and Ken Hurley and three sisters, Jewel Abrew, Sue Burbey and Mary Anway.


Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 20, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Gary Davis will officiate. Interment will follow in Prien Memorial Park. Visitation Tuesday will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue Wednesday from 8:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
