Thomas Cecil Steen, Jr, 75, passed away, Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at his home after a brief illness. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles. He is survived by three cousins, Gordon (Joyce) Steen and Gaynel (Ray) Shawa both of Lake Charles and Don (Pam) Steen of Granbury, Texas. Tommy is preceded in death by his parents T. Cecil and Lucille Siegrest Steen. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church on Second Avenue. Reverend Chan Willis will officiate. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation Saturday will be from 9:00 AM until the time of service in the church. Tommy began working in the warehouse at Kelley-Weber shortly after college and later in sales until they closed. He then worked for Calcasieu Marine National Bank until the bank was sold to Hibernia. At this time, he just retired. In his retirement, Tommy took care of his older friends as well as new ones he met in the nursing homes. He delighted in being helpful to others. He was known for visiting in the nursing homes, took many to doctor appointments, mowed lawns, took them to the beauty parlor, grocery shopped for and with them, and so many other acts of kindness. Tommy was a 1956 graduate of Lake Charles High School, and then continued his education to attain a Bachelor Degree in Forestry at McNeese State University. He played in the percussion section of the Wildcat and Cowboy bands. Tommy was a humble Servant of the church, having given countless hours through the years. His most recent responsibility, knowing he would be out to recover for a short while, was to take upon himself to inform everyone of the tasks, times and details of his duties on Sunday morning. He was also volunteered during the week and at times was the substitute secretary. He will be missed by many. He was definitely not alone during his brief illness. Sonny was there with him almost all the time with Joyce giving him breaks. They were with him when he drew his last breath. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles, 1801 2nd Avenue, Lake Charles, LA 70601.
