Turline J. Smith, 84, of Lake Charles died at 7:50 AM Thursday, September 15, 2011 in a local hospital.


Mr. Smith was born in Eunice, Louisiana on September 2, 1927 to Celina and Christoval Smith. He received his GED after taking a correspondence course. Mr. Smith worked for several grocery stores including Abe's for 25 years, AP Tea Company for 25 years and recently Albertsons for the past 16 years as a stock clerk. Mr. Smith was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church for many years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.


He is survived by his wife of 47 years Eleanor Smith of Lake Charles, two sons Karl A. Smith and Mark A. Smith both of Moss Bluff, LA, two daughters, Kristina L. Smith and Katrina R. Smith both of Lake Charles, three sisters; Mamie Unselt of Louisville, KY, Anna G. Chadd of Lake Charles, and Theresa Genna of Sulphur, LA, six grandchildren Christopher J. Smith, Kyauhna Benoit, Lena R. Benoit, Jonathan Butterfield, Jayden D. Butterfield and Samantha L. Butterfield; his brother-in-law, Eddy Dever and wife Mary Ann.


Mr. Smith is preceded in death by one son Troy A. Smith, three brothers; Douglas, Elridge, and Francis Smith, five sisters; Esther Thibodeaux, Agnes LaFleur, Beulah Whelan, Edna Bellard and Ruby Bellard.


His funeral will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 1:00 PM from St. Margaret Catholic Church. Rev. Jacob S. Conner will officiate. Burial will be in Highland memory gardens under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will begin on Friday at 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue at 8:00 AM on Saturday until 12:30 PM in the funeral home.
