Vera Estelle Speight, 82, of Lake Charles, LA died at 10:33 PM on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in a local hospital. Mrs. Speight was born October 16, 1932 in Houston, TX, where she graduated from Milby High School. She lived in Dallas, TX for eighteen years and moved to Lake Livingston upon her husband's retirement. She has called Lake Charles, LA home for the past fifteen years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught in Colonel Ware's Sunday school class. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and loved to play Pokeno. She was an avid reader and was devoted to her family. She will be missed dearly. Mrs. Speight is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Ellery Atwood Speight; children, Rick Edward Speight and wife Karen, of Houston, TX, Deborah Elaine Thornton and husband David. of Texico, IL, Patricia Diane Pulley and husband James, of Dallas, TX, and Ellery Joe Speight and companion Darryl Edwards, of Lake Charles, LA; brother, Emery Leon Laird of San Marcos, TX; sisters-in-law, Dr. Lynn Speight and Marcy Ferguson; grandchildren, James Ellery Fagan, Stephanie Greenough, Jennifer Speight, Mark Pulley, Hailey Lenz, David Thomas Thornton, and Joseph Lee Thornton; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edd Thomas and Katherine Laird; son, Robert Leon Speight; sister, Laverne Pratt; and half-brother, Robert "Bob" Foreman. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Weldon Bares will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and continue on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the start of the service. The family would like to express a special word of thanks to Stephanie Greenough for her care and compassion given.
