Verna F. Holt

Verna Mae "Nannie" Fruge Holt, 80, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, August 19, 2010, with her loving husband and nieces, Marie Fruge Thames and Sharon Fruge, at her side.

Born in Eunice, Louisiana, on January 13, 1930, to Ora and Adia Johnson Fruge, Mrs. Holt moved to Lake Charles in 1949 along with her parents, brothers and their wives. There, she attended Sowela Technical Institute and worked for the Muller Company in Ladies Ready-to-Wear and where she also became a junior executive. She was active in the YMCA.

In March, 1956, she married her loving husband, Alvin L. "Tim" Holt, Jr. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to South California, where they lived until 1988. While in the San Diego area, Verna volunteered at the Old Naval Hospital and Grossmont Hospital. She was a bowling enthusiast and was active in Girl Explorer Scouts Aviation Division. She loved to camp, as well as travel in the United States and abroad.

From 1988 until late 2003, the couple lived in Las Vegas, Nevada and Austin, Texas, and in late 2003, they came home to Lake Charles to be with Verna's loving family so they could share the joys of life with them. Verna was a loving, caring person who loved fun and laughter; she loved life and all that went with it and was always willing to help someone in need. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Cajun French Music Association and Christ the King Catholic Church.

Mrs. Holt is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Alvin L. Holt, Jr.; her brother Burchman Fruge; nieces Sharon Ann Fruge and Marie Fruge Thames; nephews Burchman "Bubba" Fruge, Jr. and Gerard "Bo" Fruge; one great niece and two great nephews and one great, great niece and one great, great nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her oldest brother, John C. Fruge.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2010, at Johnson Funeral Home. Deacon Scott Conner will officiate. Entombment will be at Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, with a scripture service at 6:00 p.m. and on Monday from 8 a.m. until service time.
