Walter J. Benoit, Sr. peacefully passed away May 29, 2024. He was 95 years of age, born in Gueydan, LA in August of 1928. Walter is the son of Theobert Benoit & Cora Mae “Moore” Benoit. Walter served in the US Navy and witnessed history in the testing of the first nuclear bombs on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

He retired from the Lake Charles Fire Department having achieved the position of Chief during his tenure. He worked his off days as a Longshoreman until he retired.

His greatest joy lay in family. He traveled often and far visiting his children, grandchildren, and extended family. Family was important to him and he made an effort to visit with everyone.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son Walter “Butch” Benoit, his wife Mary , and their children Lauren Benoit and Jacques Benoit; his daughters Amanda Stewart and her husband Dr. Timothy P. Stewart, sons Adam Stewart and Paul Stewart, daughters Mary Claire Stewart and Anna Stewart, and daughter Deanna Broussard, and Deanna’s sons Austin Broussard and Dylan Broussard; as well as great-grandchildren Wesley James Benoit, Trenton Stewart, Kenley Stewart, Collins Stewart, Callie Ann Sewart; and a favorite brother-in law, Tommy Ayo and wife “Sis” of Spotsylvania, VA.

A time of gathering for family and friends will be Friday, May 31, 2024, from 5:00PM until 8:00PM at Johnson Funeral Home, 4321 Lake St. Lake Charles, LA. 70605. The family has entrusted cremation arrangements to Johnson Funeral Home.
