Wayne Burnett

Wayne Burnett, 81, of Lake Charles passed away at 11:29 AM, Thursday, December 30, 2010 in his residence.

Wayne was born and remained a lifelong resident of Lake Charles. He was a graduate of Marion High School. His entire adult life was dedicated to serve his country and his community. Mr. Burnett was a proud member of the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS New Jersey. After leaving the Navy, he entered a twenty-five year career as an employee of the State of Louisiana. His career began working for the Department of Transportation Highway Department, Weights and Standards Division, later transferring to the LA Department of Public Safety, Drivers License Division, where he issued many Calcasieu Parish residents their first driver's license. He finished his career before retirement back with the Weights and Standards Division at the truck scales in Vinton, LA. After retirement he continued to serve the public as a Crossing Guard at several Calcasieu Parish Schools.

Wayne was also a huge supporter of McNeese Athletics. He could often be seen at the half court of a basketball game at the scorer's table, in the press box during a football game, or in the bleachers at a baseball game where he worked security. He bought season tickets this year and never attended a game due to his illness. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Iris and his father, Hoy. He is survived by his loving, dedicated wife of fifty-four years, Patricia Ruth Johnson Burnett, his two sons, Michael Wayne, and Benny Allen; two grandchildren Nicholas Ryan and Danielle Nicole Burnett; his brother, Artie Burnett and wife Judy and their two sons, Mark and Jason of Brazoria, TX

His funeral service will be at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 2, 2011 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Ken Sifford will officiate. Burial will be in High Memory Gardens. Visitation will be on Saturday, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and continue on Sunday from 10:00 AM until time of service.

Wayne was a tougher man than most people that knew him, including himself, would give him credit for being. For that we are eternally grateful and proud. He fought the tough fight.
