Wetona Hanes, 85, of Lake Charles died at 5:15 AM Friday, January 6, 2012.


Mrs. Hanes was born in Oakdale but spent all of her life in Lake Charles. She was a 1942 graduate of Lake Charles High School and was a member of the famous Kilty Drill Team.


After graduation from Vincent Business College, Mrs. Hanes began a career in insurance that would span the next forty-two years. First at Dolby Insurance Agency and Shindler-Christman Insurance Agency. She also worked at Holley Heard Insurance for several years where she not only worked in the insurance department but obtained her real estate license.


Mrs. Hanes also worked for several years at CITGO in the insurance department. After her retirement from CITGO she continued to process Medicare claims at her home for CITGO retirees.


Mrs. Hanes was a past president of the Insurance Women of Lake Charles and was honored as the Insurance Woman of the Year.


Always active in the community, Mrs. Hanes was a member of the Order of the Amaranth. She was Past Royal Matron of Lake Charles Court # 7, Order of the Amaranth, and Past Grand Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth for the State of Louisiana. She was as Past Worthy Matron of Ruth Chapter #16 and Past Noble Grand of Harmony Rebekah Lodge # 78, Order of the Eastern Star.


Mrs. Hanes and her husband were active members of the auxiliary at Moss Regional Hospital as well as at St. Patrick and Lake Charles Memorial Hospitals. Mrs. Hanes served as president of the Pink Ladies at Moss Regional Hospital for several years.


Mrs. Hanes husband of 62 years, Grover G. Hanes, Jr. preceded her in death. Her parents, Jesse Anderson, Sr. and Bertie Davis Anderson, two brothers, Charles M. Anderson, MD, and Jesse A. Anderson, Jr., as well as a sister, Helen Reeves, also preceded her in death.


Mrs. Hanes is survived by her daughter Wetona I. Hanes of Lake Charles. She is also survived by a special niece Paula Tupper Miller of Lake Charles, as well as nieces Lana Spangler of Houston, Lynn Anderson and Dawn Higgs of Lake Charles


Funeral services for Mrs. Hanes will be at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Trinity Baptist Church. The Rev. Darin Worthington will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Monday and from 8:00 AM until noon on Tuesday. Visitation for Mrs. Hanes will be at the church from 1:30 PM until time of services on Tuesday.
