Will Allen Penny Grass

June 8, 1917 — September 19, 2010

Will Allen "Penny" Moak Grass, 93, left this world to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 19, 2010.

Born to Thomas Allen and Beulah Williams Moak in Converse, Louisiana, Mrs. Grass graduated from Oak Grove High School and in 1939 received her Registered Nurse's degree from The Shreveport Charity Hospital School of Nursing. She was a First Aid nurse at the Orange Ship Yard in Orange, Texas and was later employed at Huey P. Long Charity Hospital in Pineville from 1939 to 1947 and at W. O. Moss Regional Hospital in Lake Charles from 1963 until her retirement in 1977.

Mrs. Grass was a devoted homemaker and excellent cook. She loved music and dancing, and she especially enjoyed being one of the "Hollywood Rackettes" of Sulphur and a member of the Swinging Rebels Square Dance Club. Her favorite pastimes were painting and making potpourri. For over fifty years, Mrs. Grass was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. The lights of Mrs. Grass's life were her husband and daughter. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Lake Charles from 1962.

Mrs. Grass is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Major Philip M. Grass and her daughter, Susan Christy Marriner and husband Richard, all of Lake Charles, and C. P. "Red" Moak of Baton Rouge.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at Johnson Funeral Home. Dr. John White will officiate. Interment will be at Prien Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 am until service time.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 830 Hodges Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601.

The family wishes to express their grateful appreciation to Major and Mrs. Grass's caregiver and friend for the past seven years, Lynn Hamilton Gray, who is like a sister to Susan and who selflessly shared with them her loving and compassionate assistance, bringing radiance and joy into their home.
