Winfred Statum, Jr. was born December 19, 1944 in Eunice, LA and was a lifelong resident of Calcasieu Parish. He was a graduate of Marion High School and attended McNeese State University.
He was a Bible quiz coach for nineteen years, with teams placing in the top three seven times – including two Senior National Championships, three second place, and two third place finishes. In addition, he coached a national championship team at the Junior Bible Quiz level. He was known for his generous spirit in sharing his knowledge by helping other teams to succeed.
Winfred was an excellent cook and was known for his gumbo which he prepared for the annual MBP New Year’s celebration and for various Bible quiz events.
Mr. Statum was a Certified Welding Inspector and worked in industry his entire career before retiring in September 2010. He served in the United States Army 1965-1967, deploying to Vietnam for one tour of duty.
He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Sharon Green Statum; children, Winfred (Trey) Statum, III and wife Jenny and Natha Mahoney and husband Justin; brother, Wayne and wife Margaret; and youngest brother, Huey. He is also survived by four grandchildren who were the light of his life - Ella and Aubrey Statum and Windsor and Navy Mahoney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Winfred Sr. and Hadry Statum; and brother, Charles.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the Delisa Cox Center at the Pentecostal Campgrounds, 1800 Hickory Hill Road, Pineville, LA. A burial will be at New Ritchie Cemetery in Moss Bluff. A gathering of family members and friends will be at the church on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the start of the service.
