Winston "Lanny" Richard

September 23, 1940 — January 13, 2024

Lanny Richard, whose full legal name is Winston Landon Richard, passed away at age 83 on January 13, 2024 after a brief illness in a local hospital.

He was born on September 23, 1940 in Jennings, LA and grew up in Lake Arthur, LA. His love of knowledge started early in his life. He read about a private military academy in Lebanon, TN and wanted to go there for high school. A representative of the school visited the family in Lake Arthur in uniform to answer questions and confirm Lanny’s interest. He and his parents agreed, and he went there for his high school education and graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy. Everyone there affectionately knew him as “Ace.”

It was divine providence that brought two travelers for the big city experience of New York City, Lanny from Louisiana, and Alice from Scotland. Alice had never been to America and thought New York would be a beautiful experience, and beautiful it was. What started in NYC led to a lifetime of love and happiness, including being married and starting a family before they relocated back to Lake Arthur. Together, Lanny and Alice had three children and five grandchildren.

There was nothing they faced that they did not face together, including working together to establish family businesses to support their family. Upon settling back in Lake Charles, Lanny attended McNeese State University, where he graduated with a BS degree in accounting. Throughout the years, he worked as an accountant and business owner. He was also a professor at Sowela for eighteen years.

Lanny loved learning. He had a passion for family genealogy and carefully researched and validated all information that he put into the family tree. He was an avid photographer and developed his own pictures. He also had a passion for history, politics, and world events, whether watching documentaries or reading from the comfort of his recliner. He also enjoyed attending estate sales and collecting antiques. His wisdom and knowledge will be greatly missed.

He was welcomed into Heaven by his daughter, Cindi Richard, grandson, Caden Socha, his parents, Dr. Golden George Richard and Mavis Louise Richard, and two brothers, G. G. Richard, Jr. and Ken Richard.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of fifty-eight years, Alice F. Reilly Richard, his daughter, Dawn and Freddie Rosteet, and a son, Landon and Aileen Richard, four grandchildren, Abigail Rosteet of Lake Charles, Allison Rosteet of Minot, ND, Gage Sosha of Florida, and John Reilly Richard of Lafayette, a brother, Chris and Jan Richard of Pennsylvania and numerous extended family members in the states and Scotland.

According to his wishes, his cremation was entrusted to Simple Traditions by Johnson, and he will return home with his beloved family with a celebration of his life to be held at a later date.

The Family extends a heartfelt thank you to the amazing physicians and staff of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for their compassion and care.
