Yvonne M. Hoefer, 82, of Sulphur, LA passed away on Monday, August 24, 2015 in her residence. Mrs. Hoefer was born on April 21, 1933 in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. She was raised and educated in Switzerland and received her nursing degree in Zurich. In 1958, Mrs. Hoefer moved to the United States where she met and married her husband, Elver Hoefer. She continued her nursing practice for over 50 years and held numerous positions such as the Director of Nursing and OB Head Nurse at Salem Memorial Hospital in Salem, IL. Her last position before she retired was caring for patients in a state facility in Fort Bayard, New Mexico. She and her patients had a special bond and relationship. In 2007 they moved to Sulphur, LA to be near their son and daughter-in-law. Her favorite thing to do was to travel. Her journeys extended to the four corners of the Earth covering more than 30 countries in continents including Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. One of her most memorable experiences was studying and caring for Orangutans in the rainforests of Borneo. She took safaris in Tanzania, saw Mt. Everest in Nepal and swam on the beaches of Bali and Rio de Janeiro. Those left to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted husband of 54 years, Elver Hoefer of Sulphur, LA; two sons, Daniel Hoefer (Rebecca Murphy) of Marietta, GA and Tom Hoefer (Kaye Billeaudeaux) of Sulphur, LA; a sister, Susanne Kraus of Muttenz, Switzerland; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Marianne, and Patrick Hoefer of Marietta, GA. Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the First Christian Church of Lake Charles, 2525 Second Ave. Visitation will begin in the church at 3:00 PM and continue until the start of the service. A graveside service will be held in St. Paul Churchyard in Affton, MO on Monday at 2:00 PM. Local arrangements were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home.
